Chicago Midway International Airport (Midway) based in southwest side of Chicago, Illinois is operated by the Chicago Department of Aviation and owned by the City of Chicago. The Airport is located in a densely populated area with roads and buildings close to the main runways with insufficient RESA.

The Airport had a sever overrun accident in 2005 and have since then had arresting systems in place to increase safety for passengers and surrounding areas. When the current arresting systems were replaced in 2014 Runway Safe were awarded the contract.

The Chicago contract was the start of Runway Safe and the world’s first greenEMAS was installed at Midway in 2014 with subsequent installations in 2015 and 2016.

Runway Safe delivered design service, project management, quality assurance and foam glass for the four installations at Midway between year 2014 and late 2016. Construction services were performed by K-Five and Runway Safe Installation Partner Rossi.

The installations were performed during full closure and Runway Safe proved to the task of installing a greenEMAS during less than 72 hours continuous work.
