How the BAK-12 Works
The BAK-12 uses a velocity-sensitive braking philosophy to manage kinetic energy safely.
- Standby mode.
A static pressure system maintains precise hook cable tension in the battery position. - Engagement.
As the aircraft pulls the tape, rotation of the tape reel drives a hydraulic pump and cam-actuated valve. - Dynamic braking.
The pump generates pressure proportional to the aircraft’s velocity. A shuttle valve transitions the system from static (dynamic) to hydraulic (braking pressure) within 120-200 ft; (36-60 m) into the arrestment - Optimized deceleration.
A field-adjustable cam profile regulates brake pressure throughout the arrestment. The result is a smooth, programmed stop tailored to specific aircraft weight ranges.
