From late May until mid July 2016, Runway Safe and preferred construction partner KIBAG Airfield Construction will be installing a greenEMAS® at Zürich International Airport in Switzerland – host to 26.3 million passengers in 2015 and with a year-on-year increase of 3.1%.
In 2015 the airport conducted an open procurement for an EMAS and Runway Safe won the contract. The airport needed an EMAS for Runway 28 in order to meet the requirements from FOCA, the Federal Office of Civil Aviation in Switzerland.
The installation differed from other installations by the way it was undertaken. At Chicago, the runway was closed off for 56 hrs. and the greenEMAS was installed from start to finish, leaving the MMA coating for later, but was considered fully operational after the 56 hr. installation period. In Zürich the greenEMAS was built section by section at night, thus allowing the runway to be open in the daytime for all regular operations.
The installation work is ongoing every night after airport closure.
